How many players
Teams of three (triples)
each player will play with 2 boules
Teams of two (doubles)
each player will play with 3 boules
A single game
each player will play with 3 boules
Depending on how many members arrive to play Pétanque, teams will be created.
How to play
-
Yellow plastic ring is placed at one end of a piste and marked to indicate its position
-
A coin is thrown to see which team goes first
-
One person from the team that won the toss will stand with both feet inside the circle and throw the ‘jack’ between 6 to 10 m
-
The first boule is thrown by the person who threw the jack with the aim to get it as close as you can to the jack
-
A member from the opponent’s team will then take a turn in throwing a boule to try and get closer to the jack
-
The next boule is thrown by the team whose boule is NOT the closest to the jack
Developing a Boule Technique
Pointing
-
Hold a boule with the palm of the hand on top
-
With an easy swing of the arm, release the boule so that it makes an arc in the air and lands roughly halfway to the coche or jack, the boule rolling forward to stop close to it
-
Boules can be thrown from either a standing or squatting position – always remember to stand stationary within the yellow circle
Shooting
A technique that comes with practise and experience
-
Boules are thrown with more force to knock the opposition team’s boules out of play!
-
Remember the more boules closest to the jack from your team, will win you more points, for example three boules means 3 points!
-
Points are scored at the end of every round – known as an ‘end’. Once you have reached 13 points – you have won!
